Finding the right hair style starts well before your haircut appointment.

There are several things that you should consider before deciding on a hair style. First issue to consider is your face shape. Everyone has a different face shape and some hairstyles are more suited for certain face shapes.

Determine your face shape by pulling all the hair off your forehead and standing in front of a mirror. Use a washable product, such as a bar of soap and trace the outline of your face in the mirror. Then stand back and look at the shape you have drawn.

The basic face shapes are oval, round, rectangular, square, heart diamond and oblong. Typically a face shape will be a mix between several of the face shapes.

Next you should consider your hair texture. Just like there are hair styles suited for certain face shapes, there are hairstyles suited for certain hair textures. For example let's say that you love a certain celebrity hair style and the celebrity has very thick coarse hair. If you hair is very thin, then this hair style that you like will probably not go well with your hair type.

LIfestyle is always an issue that many men and women seem to overlook right from the beginning. When you see a hairstyle that you really like you get all wrapped up in how great you will look with the new cut. Just remember that after your trip to the salon, you will have to style your hair every day. You won't be able to just wake up every morning and have it look just like when you got it first cut.

Longer hair styles, layers, will require extra styling time, extra hair care products. If your hair is unmanageable you may get frustrated with a complicated hair cut.

Another factor that is probably best categorized in the lifestyle section is your maintenance schedule. If you get a hair cut with many layers, or a short hairstyle, you may require frequent trims. Do you have the schedule and the money to support the upkeep on a certain hairstyle?

Remember that as layers grow out, they won't lay as nice as when you first had them cut. If you can't make it to the salon for a trim, you could become very disgruntled with your hair style in the meantime.

Finally, maybe you should consider getting a few minor updates to your style before diving into a whole new look. Simple changes include adding bangs to your hairstyle or adding a few lowlights or highlights to offset your natural color and draw attention, or buying some cool new hair accessories and styling your hair differently.
